That the divine Scriptures know to call the Monad Lord and God has already been made clear from what was previously said, through which God said to his own servant Moses, “and God said again to Moses, “Thus you will say to the sons of Israel: the Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, he has sent me to you” (Exodus 3:15). You see how, having pointed out one person (prosopon) to us in that passage, he calls the same Lord and God. Again, similarly Scripture says “and the Lord said all these words saying, I am the Lord your God, the one delivering you from the Land of Egypt, from the house of slaves, You shall have no other gods besides me” (Exodus 20:1-3). You hear how through the one pronoun he proclaims that the only God is one. And again a little later he says, “I am the Lord your God,” saying that he himself is Lord and God. And what do we learn from another scripture? “And you will know today,” he says, “and you will not be warped in your understanding, for the Lord your God, is God in heaven above and on the earth below, and there is no other besides him” (Deuteronomy 4:39). And again in the same book of Deuteronomy “Hear, Israel,” it says, “the Lord your God, the Lord is one, and you will love the Lord your God with your whole heart and with your whole soul, and with your whole mind” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). And again in the same book, “Behold, behold that I am, and there is no god apart from me, I put to death and I give life, I strike down, and I restore” (Deuteronomy 32:39). Therefore, I do not know how Asterius can allege to completely and reverently follow the portion of Scripture which says “the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above and the earth below,” and “There is no other god besides him,” and that “he is one” and “There is no other apart from him.”
