Document: Letter 35 (Damasus)
Reference: Stegmuller 3315
Incipit: Dormientem te et longo iam tempore
Addressee: Jerome
Date: 384 (Kelly p. 83)
Earliest ms.: Sankt-Gallen, Switzerland: Stiftsbibliothek, 230, f. 331 and following. 8th century. (Lambert, I: p. 517)

Notes: Damasus addresses five questions to Jerome with a request for information concerning them. Discussed in Fremantle, p. 47.Pierre Nautin argued convincingly that this letter was not written before Damasus’ death in late 384 (and therefore not by Damasus), but that both this letter and its reply, letter 36, were written by Jerome sometime later (P. Nautin, ‘Le premier echange epistolaire entre Jerome et Damase: lettres reelles ou fictives?’ FZThPh 30 [1983], pp. 331 334).
See letters 18a, 18b, 19, 20, and 36 for more comments on authenticity.
