For Sabellius, who himself had fallen from the correct faith, did not accurately know either God or his holy Word. For whoever does not know the Word also does not know the Father. For he says, “No one knows the Father except the Son” (Mt 11:27), that is, the Word, since the Word brings about knowledge of the Father through himself. Such is the case also for those Jews at that time who thought they knew God but rejected his Word through whom alone God is known. He said, “No one knows the Father except the Son and him to whom the Son reveals him” (Mt 11:27). For since it is impossible to know God in any other way he teaches men to know him through his Word. Therefore also that Sabellius was tripped up because he did not accurately know the Father and his Word.
